The first song today was about a good girl who loved her momma, Jesus, America, horses, and her boyfriend too. She’s also crazy about Elvis.

Stray Thoughts: 3/24/2017

Today’s installment of my “Adding video’s to my top 100 song list”, includes two that deserve tiny little stories.

Folsom Prison Blues

Evidently as a kid(I still do at times), I would play a song over and over, just stick it in on repeat and let it go, it was harder to do on a walkman/cassette but I did it so much I could time it. This was also a song as a kid I would sing for whoever wanted to hear or didn’t want to hear it. I’m torn about the fact that there is no such video of it. Part of me me is glad that it doesn’t exist, but part of me wishes it did just so I could see the other people in the video.

Free Fallin’

At times it’s my favorite Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers song and others it passes that crown on to “You Don’t Know How it Feels”. With that said there is nothing I dislike about this song. I liked it the first time I heard it.  It stuck. It hit. I mean it’s just one of those that is with you forever. I take that back. I hate the John Mayer covered and idiots attribute it to him, otherwise it’s damn near flawless.

Then after hearing the story about how it was basically created on a whim with Petty trying out a new keyboard, and it just appeared out of nowhere, it makes it a bit more magical. Then when you learn that “Full Moon Fever” as a whole was turned down by MCA to start with makes you wonder “what the hell they were thinking”.

The Video

We can’t forget the video with that angel skateboarding on the half pipe. It never made me want to skateboard, but I sure as hell would watch her.

Mulholland

I think this song helped manufacture my infatuation with the Hollywood Hills and Mulholland Drive. In the least it helped cement it. The seed was planted back in ‘84 out in Los Angeles during the Olympics while stopping off on an overlook and just taking in the sights of Los Angeles. If I ever were to sky-dive, I would want it to be out over Mulholland or at least where I could view the Hollywood Hills as i fell from the sky.

I want to glide down, over Mulholland…
I want to write her name in the sky…
I want to free fall out into nothin’…
I want to leave this world for awhile…

Free Fallin’ Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Updating “My Top 100 Songs” list by adding videos(2 each week), with the Traveling Wilburys, since they didn’t tour and there are very few live versions, it’s basically either the video, or stuff on youtube that people have created with images of the band.

I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before, but the song “Dirty World” reminds me of the E.E. Cummins poem “She Being Brand”, with all the metaphorical innuendoes that are littered through both the song and the poem.

Typing this reminds me of a couple of posts.

No, John Mayer still didn’t write Free Fallin’

No, E.E. Cummings didn’t either, but a far better mix up.

Had to change things ups. The other background was simply too “bright”. I needed something darker, so I went with an edited version of Ventura Boulevard. as the sun goes into hiding.

If you drop LSD and look closely you might see “the Vampires walkin’ through t he valley” or in the very least “the bad boys standing in the shadows”.
